Plot Synopsis
This reality series explores the underground world of the Bounce music scene in New Orleans, following Big Freedia along with her family, music team, and fellow artists, like Katey Red, Sissy Nobby, and others. As the latest superstar of the New Orleans Bounce scene, Freedia's goal is to spread the gospel of Bounce to the rest of the world. But with all the cat-fighting on her management team, she's facing drama at every turn. Freedia's mother, Vera, has styled her hair for 23 years and supported her when she struggled to find her identity as one of the first gay rappers to break out. After being diagnosed with cancer two years ago, Vera wants to spend the rest of her days ensuring that Freedia stays true to herself. As Big Freedia's new manager, Renee is under plenty of pressure to make her international tour a big success. While it's her first time managing an artist, Renee does have access to one of the West Coast's premiere hip hop studios -- and her husband's a big-time record producer. Melvin was Freedia's longtime manager until Renee stepped in to take the reigns. Feeling slightly threatened by her presence, Melvin is unsure if they share the same vision for Freedia's future. He's now the local New Orleans expert and tour manager, while Renee handles business beyond the city limits. Brought on board as Freedia's new hairstylist, Torelle is quite the drama queen. She immediately beefs with Vera, who doesn't like the idea of someone else styling Freedia's hair. DJ Rusty Lazer is the porkpie-hatted, gray-stached DJ extraordinaire behind Freedia's wall of sound. As one of Bounce music's first stars, Katey Red is known as the Original Bounce Mother, but with the arrival of new artists like Big Freedia, the sultry star struggles to reach out beyond her comfort zone. Sissy Nobby is one of Bounce music's visionary songwriters and producers, but there's a bit of professional jealousy between Nobby and Freedia, who has surpassed Nobby lately. BIG FREEDIA returned for its second season on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 11pm ET/PT on Fuse. In the season opener, Freedia deals with his mother's health and fighting between his managers as he prepares for the prestigious South by Southwest music festival in Austin, TX. Season 3 of BIG FREEDIA premiered on Fuse on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 11pm ET/PT. The new season opened with Big Freedia launching his biggest tour ever with a building-shaking, window-breaking show, heading to Atlanta in the second episode of Season 3. Season 4 of BIG FREEDIA premiered on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 11pm ET/PT on Fuse. Following the success of her first US tour, the new season finds Big Freedia juggling a slew of new creative opportunities that could expand her empire just as health concerns could derail her career. While the team prepares for a European tour, dancers Skip & Flash both pursue their own dreams, and Freedia's ex-boyfriend Devon tries to win back his Queen. In the season opener, "Freedia Takes Manhattan," Freedia bounces through New York City and meets the publishers of her upcoming autobiography; meanwhile, Skip dreams of bouncing on Broadway. The fifth season of BIG FREEDIA premiered on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 11pm ET/PT on Fuse. Freedia's got a brand-new manager with some major plans for the Queen Diva, and while Freedia's excited to jump in feet first, her longtime manager Melvin is a bit more apprehensive. Big chances and even bigger challenges lie ahead for the Queen of Bounce as she takes on a juicy new movie role, expands her brand to the worlds of cooking and fitness, records a new album and talks marriage with longtime boyfriend Devon. Just as a career-boosting feature on Beyonce's chart-topping single "Formation" pushes Freedia's fame to greater heights, her world comes crashing down. With Team Freedia and her family by her side, the Queen Diva fights to hold onto all that is dear to her. This series returned for its eight-episode sixth season on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 10pm ET/PT on Fuse with a new title: BIG FREEDIA BOUNCES BACK. Newly sober after battling legal troubles, the Queen Diva is determined to bounce back on track and take her career to the next level. In Season 6, Freedia is hungry to land her first major-label deal, reignite her live shows and give back to her community even more. How... by shaking sh!t up!! Freedia's on a mission but will her boyfriend and team get in formation and up their game or will they get left behind? Only the Queen knows!
