Plot Synopsis

BEYOND THE HEADLINES is a series of one-hour documentaries that feature a subject of a Lifetime Original Movie, usually scheduled so that the companion documentary premieres immediately after the debut of the TV movie. Initially focusing on crime dramas, BEYOND THE HEADLINES chronicled the lives of the Craigslist Killer, Amanda Knox, Jodi Arias, and many more criminals and victims. More recently, BEYOND THE HEADLINES has expanded its reach, documenting the life of Donatella Versace after Lifetime aired HOUSE OF VERSACE.

On Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT, Lifetime premiered the TV movie THE GIRL LOCKED UPSTAIRS: THE TANYA KACH STORY, immediately followed at 10pm by the debut of "Beyond the Headlines: The Tanya Kach Story With Elizabeth Smart," the latest installment of the post-movie BEYOND THE HEADLINES. In this one-hour special, Elizabeth Smart meets the real-life Tanya Kach, who at 14-years old vanished from a Pittsburgh suburb. In a revealing conversation, Tanya recounts the horror of the 10 years she spent in captivity in her predator's bedroom, and confides in Elizabeth about the realities of grooming, the pain of victim-blaming, and the courage she discovered in herself in the years that followed her harrowing experience.
