Premiering during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each year since 2019, BET HER PRESENTS: THE WAITING ROOM is a series of short films that explore stories of women battling breast cancer. THE WAITING ROOM is part of BET HER PRESENTS: HER STORIES, which is a series of original films by Black women that shed light on mental illness (BET HER PRESENTS: THE COUCH) and breast cancer awareness (BET HER PRESENTS: THE WAITING ROOM).
The first event featured four stories, debuting on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 8pm ET/PT on BET Her:
"The Story of Nadia": An OB/GYN finds herself as the patient. Due to the necessary treatment to survive, she faces the harsh reality of not being able to personally have the "gift" that she delivers to women each day. With Dr. Bennett (Keshia Knight-Pulliam), Nadia (Meta Golding) and Travis (Christopher Alan Martin). The writer and director is Micah Ariel Watson.
"Bonded: The Story of Kendall": Estranged mother and daughter come together after the daughter is diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. With Dr. Bennett (Keshia Knight-Pulliam), Kendall (La'Myia Good), Zola (Angie Stone) and Shannon (Kim Davis). The writer and director is Shateka Johnson.
"The Ballad of Lexi Smith": A comedienne deals with her cancer battle by incorporating her story into her stage routine. Despite being alternately funny and uncomfortable for the audience, she survives by sharing her truth. With Dr. Bennett (Keshia Knight-Pulliam), Lexi (Michelle Threatt), Sammi (Tequilla Whitfield) and Wes (Jean Elie). The writer and director is Nicole Taylor-Roberts.
"The Story of Trinity": A woman learns that her cancer is no longer in remission and sets out to live her remaining days creating memories with her loved ones. With Dr. Bennett (Keshia Knight-Pulliam), Trinity (Rashan Ali), Devon (Ernestine Johnson), Rory (Alexander Benton), Steven (Karon Joseph Riley) and Shelby (Lyric Chance Thomas). The writer and director is Cas Sigers-Beedles.
