Plot Synopsis
BEHIND BARS: WOMEN INSIDE is a one-hour docuseries that takes a raw, intimate and in-depth look into the extreme lives of women incarcerated in the Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center, housing mothers, daughters, grandmothers and sisters as well as gangbangers, murderers, drug smugglers and armed robbers. With some 200 inmates, the series goes behind the walls of this American prison, where the reality of life when orange really is the new black.
Notorious gang banger Baby D. considers herself to be prison Top Dog, with the ability to place hits on fellow prisoners. She's set her sights on Krystal from a rival gang--will the guards be able to keep her safe? And 8-month pregnant Vanessa, addicted to heroin, has already lost custody of her other children and if she gives birth in jail, she'll lose this baby too. Desperate to secure a place on a drug rehabilitation program, will she get out of jail in time? Transgender inmate Franklin is the resident prison ladies' man and he's getting a whole heap of attention. Relationships in the jail are strictly forbidden but this doesn't stop Franklin from falling for a fellow jailbird. Will their relationship be discovered by the guards? Baby D continues to throw her weight around, while tensions rise between her and a group of new inmates. Will pregnant heroin addict Vanessa lose her place on a treatment program and be forced to give birth in jail? Even in prison, a woman needs cash and Missy has an unusual way of getting hers--a Sugar Daddy who visits every week. But awaiting trial for the serious crime of home invasion and kidnapping, Missy must decide whether she's able to give up a life of money and drugs in order to get her kids back. The romance between transgender Franklin and a fellow inmate continues to blossom. Middle class and educated, Phlebotomist Julia is not your usual jail bird. Having never been in trouble with the law before, she's been charged with the murder of her ex- boyfriend. She'll have to learn to navigate jail and contemplate the possibility of life behind bars. When an inmate fails a drug test, the full weight of prison rule comes down on her. Although expecting much less, a meeting with Missy's lawyer reveals she's looking at up to twenty years. How will the mom of three cope with such a long term?
