Plot Synopsis

Evert Backstrom is a rock star among cops. Starring as a TV expert doesn't help his ego or reputation. He thinks he's a genius -- and he is, at solving crimes. When a woman's skull is found, it seems she was murdered recently, but DNA points to her death in the 2004 tsunami. Prosecutor Hanna Hwass believes it's a mistake, but Backstrom sees a case only he can solve: a woman who has died twice. BACKSTROM made its U.S. debut on Monday, April 26, 2021, as Acorn TV dropped all six episodes of the first season.

The second season of BACKSTROM made its U.S. debut on Monday, September 19, 2022 on Acorn TV, as the streaming service released all six episodes of the new season. Evert Backstrom is in peak form. He is still making tabloid headlines with his ability to solve murders quickly and efficiently -- and arrogantly. But when his rival, celebrity lawyer Tomas Eriksson, is murdered, it proves difficult not to let emotions interfere in the investigation. The evidence points in multiple directions, and before long, more dead bodies are found. The motive connecting the murders seems to be an old music box from Russia depicting the storybook character Pinocchio, worth 300 million kronor. Lies abound and it doesn't take long before Backstrom himself starts to hide things from his colleagues in the police department. He wants to solve the crime and claim Pinocchio for himself. His friend, art expert G Gurra, is going to help him get it. But everything becomes complicated when Ankan seriously begins to question Backstrom's leadership -- and honesty. Finally, Backstrom's greed puts him in real danger. Season 2 opens with Detective Evert Backstrom refusing to appear on TV anymore alongside his archenemy, attorney Tomas Eriksson. When Ankan finds a connection between Eriksson and Backstrom's old flame, he is furious. Either Tina is having an affair with the man he detests, or she is still collaborating with the Russians. Backstrom heads to Eriksson's place to confront him but finds that someone has beaten him to it.

Season 3 of BACKSTROM made its U.S. debut on Monday, May 20, 2024 on Acorn TV, which released all six episodes. Behind his boss' back, Backstrom travels to the holiday paradise of Palma with Niemi to follow up on a lead on the murder of his childhood friend Sally -- his only unsolved murder case. When a Swedish man is found murdered in the hotel, Backstrom starts his own investigation, which is not appreciated by the local police. Meanwhile, an explosive device suspected of being linked to the Talje cartel goes off in central Stockholm. Backstrom uses his unconventional methods to find clues. The two murder cases and the explosive device in Stockholm seem somehow connected. But will Backstrom get the answers he needs in the case of his childhood friend Sally to finally feel at peace?
