Plot Synopsis
This fantasy drama follows the adventures of Jason, a young man searching for his father, when he gets lost in the strange and mystical city of Atlantis, where Greek myths and legends are re-imagined and where his new friends, Hercules and Pythagoras, help him realize his destiny. ATLANTIS takes place before the city descends to the depths of the ocean, but "there's a sense of impending doom -- but that won't happen for a good 10 years," according to producers, who also predicted that Greek scholars will be angry, because these characters will create their own legends: Hercules, a lover of women and wine, who is little more than a figment of his own over-ambitious imagination and nothing like a fit warrior of legend; Pythagoras, who is braver than many men ten times his size, despite his lack of physical prowess; Medusa, a world away from the infamous snake-haired monster of legend, whose kindness and good humor ensures she forms a relationship with the three boys; Ariadne, heir to the throne, who lives a privileged but lonely life, dominated by her sacred duties to both the gods and Atlantis; Pasiphae, the Queen and real power behind the throne, who is rumored to worship the goddess of witchcraft, Hecate; Minos, King of Atlantis, who is troubled by self-doubt, striving to appease the gods for fear of incurring their wrath; and The Oracle, who has never felt the burden of responsibility more than when Jason arrives in Atlantis. Two months after its world premiere on BBC One in the UK, ATLANTIS debuted on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT on BBC America in the United States. ATLANTIS returned for its second season on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT on BBC America, the same day in the United States as in the United Kingdom. The Season 1 finale revealed that Pasiphae was in fact Jason's mother, and now, in the new season, her desire to reign has not abated, while her rivalry with step daughter Ariadne takes her to new depths. Jason's personal involvement with Ariadne is surely a complication for Pasiphae. Season 2 opens one year after the Season 1 finale. With Minos dead, Ariadne is Queen and finds herself at war with her old adversary Pasiphae. The kingdom stands on the brink of collapse and the struggle for power is both bloody and brutal. With the future looking bleak, Ariadne turns to her most trusted friends for support and so, Jason, Hercules, and Pythagoras are thrust into the very heart of politics and power in the city. In the Season 2 mid-season finale, Ariadne lies on her deathbed, Jason's guilt is almost too much to bear. He resolves to do all he can to save her and embarks on a dangerous quest into the unknown. Emotions run high as he battles against the hand of fate, but after a daring encounter with the ancient Grey Sisters, his mission sees him come full circle, bringing him face to face with Medea and Pasiphae once more. After a six-month break, ATLANTIS returned with new episodes on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT on BBC America. In the Season 2 mid-season premiere, "A Fate Worse Than Death," news of Ariadne and Jason's wedding plans reaches Pasiphae, who is terrified Atlantis will be lost to her for ever -- so she resolves to do all she can to prevent the union, no matter what the cost. However, her pursuit of power has devastating consequences for everyone.

On Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 11pm ET/PT, BBC America premiered the "The Queen Must Die (Part 2)," the second part of the two-episode Season 2 finale of ATLANTIS. Jason is determined to rescue his fellow prisoners from the amphitheatre. But this means returning to Atlantis, the heart of Pasiphae's power and, with traitors at every turn, this is more dangerous than ever. As events come to a head it becomes clear that while Pasiphae lives, there will never be peace. For Jason and his friends only one thing is certain -- the Queen must die. As Jason and Ariadne prepare to return to power in Atlantis, they must decide who they can trust. Anxieties run high as our heroes form new alliances with old enemies, whilst questioning those they love. As they enter the city for the first time since Pasiphae's death, only one thing is certain -- nothing will ever be the same again.
