Plot Synopsis

Executive produced by Norman Lear (both seasons) along with Gretchen Carlson and Jussie Smollett (Season 2) and Shonda Rhimes and Common (Season 1), AMERICA DIVIDED is a documentary series that uncovers untold stories of how record levels of inequality in education, housing, healthcare, labor, criminal justice and the political system are undermining the American dream. This eight-story, 4.5-hour first season follows high-profile correspondents as they explore aspects of inequality related to their own biographies. The 90-minute series opener features stories from: Common, who returns to his hometown of Chicago -- ground zero for disparities in the criminal justice system; Rosario Dawson, who uncovers the man-made disaster behind Flint, Michigan's water crisis; and Norman Lear, who investigates gentrification in New York City. Subsequent episodes feature: America Ferrera, who travels to Texas to witness battles pertaining to voting rights; Peter Sarsgaard, who explores the addiction crisis ravaging a heartland beset by unemployment and the shuttering of America's factories; Zach Galifianakis, who investigates the political landscape in his home state of North Carolina and considers how it's emblematic of the country's deepening political divide during the 2016 campaign; Amy Poehler, who witnesses the complex challenges faced by domestic workers who maintain an intimate relationship with the families that employ them while also struggling for better conditions; and Jesse Williams, who goes back to the classroom and becomes immersed in the battle to fix inequality in education.

On Friday, May 4, 2018 at 9pm ET/PT, EPIX premiered the second season of AMERICA DIVIDED. In the season opener, "Washington's War on Women," Gretchen Carlson, who recently made her own personal story public, takes viewers to the halls of Congress to uncover a pervasive culture of sexual harassment held in place for decades by a deeply flawed system. Other correspondents in Season 2 include:

"Who Controls the Land" (May 11): Native American actor Martin Sensmeier travels to San Juan County, Utah, to investigate the controversy over the Bears Ears National Monument. While there, he uncovers the decades of struggle for equality by the county's Native citizens.

"There Has to Be a Better Way" (May 18): Diane Guerrero, the daughter of deported immigrant parents, travels to Houston, Texas to witness the growing conflict over sanctuary cities in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Then, Nick Offerman travels to the coal country of eastern Kentucky to investigate the looming collapse of the coal industry and explores its legacy. While there he meets the rising voices calling for a different future.

"Whose History?" (May 25): Jussie Smollett travels to Tennessee to witness the growing movement to bring down Confederate monuments and commemorate the deaths of thousands of African-Americans lynched during decades of racial terror.
