Plot Synopsis

Former 1980's pop star Debbie Taylor is bent on making a comeback and returning to the Billboard charts. As she prepares to once again take the music industry by storm, her record label deems her irrelevant and abruptly drops her. Out of money, she leaves New York City and drives to the small town of Youngstown, Ohio to stay with her sister Denise, a high school assistant principal living with her husband and young daughter. There, her life as a diva takes an abrupt turn when she's asked to substitute for a local high school music teacher. When she reluctantly agrees, she is introduced to a lovable group of teenage misfits preparing to perform at their upcoming prom. While unsuccessfully attempting to connect with the students and with her sister's suburban family, she meets Noah, the school's quirky guidance counselor. With his help, she wins over the students and begins leading them in a series of rehearsals. She soon finds herself becoming attracted to Noah and growing fond of small-town life. When the students discover that she used to be a pop star, they secretly shoot a video of her singing and post it online. With the prom only one day away, Debbie learns that the video has gone viral and that she's become an overnight Internet sensation. When her former record label offers her a lucrative contract, she returns to New York, leaving Noah and Denise to support the students at their prom performance. But as she prepares for her triumphant return to the music industry, she soon wonders if the glamour of show business is still the life she wants.
