Plot Synopsis
Based on the story ''Blessed Assurance'' by Allan Gurganus. In 1954 a Korean War vet returns to his Southern home town hoping to find a professional job and not ''slave'' at the local cotton mill. His best opportunity seems to be collecting weekly funeral-insurance payments from low-income blacks. He soon befriends an elderly woman who falls behind on her premiums-jeopardizaing both her policy and his job. He eventually learns that the business is a scam and realizes that there is more to life then getting rich.
