Plot Synopsis
Successful and driven single mom Jenna Thompson writes teen novels, and she has only five weeks to deliver the next one to her publisher. So, this year's annual beach vacation with her kids, Nick and Ally, will be a working vacation for her. She's rented a duplex for five weeks that is adjacent to the ocean, and the camp where the kids will spend their days while she writes. Upon arrival, the family soon meets their new next-door neighbor, devil-may-care surfer Lucas McKinnon, with whom they will be sharing walls and a patio for the next month. Lucas spends his days surfing and his nights partying with friends on the beach, and is anything but Jenna's idea of a responsible adult. From the very start, he rubs her the wrong way. He cranks up his music at night, sleeps late, and allows his dog to run around at will. While she can't stand having the dog around, Ally is in love with her new four-legged neighbor, and begs Lucas to let her take him for walks. Meanwhile, Nick is struggling with his swim times at camp, desperate to make the team in the fall, but quickly losing hope. Jenna bangs away at her novel with little success. Lucas soon finds himself bonding with Nick and Ally and Jenna begins to see a different side of him, when the two find themselves alone together one evening for dinner. Nick is now ready for his time trials, thanks to private coaching from Lucas but when he fails to show at Nick's trials, Jenna pulls away from Lucas, convinced that he is just the party guy she thought her was. The truth is that Jenna just can't face the possibility of another failed relationship. However, there is still one more day before they pack up and go home, and neither Jenna nor Lucas is going to let the other go without sharing what's really in their hearts. That said, Lucas makes one final play for Jenna, who realizes that she was far too quick to judge this book by its cover.
