Plot Synopsis

Darcy Miller is a hard-working scientist working toward her doctorate degree. A true realist with a logical outlook, she is surprised when her mentor, Dr. Reed, approaches her about her grant proposal and suggests a complete rewrite. He recommends she meet with Professor Nathan Riley in the English department, who can help her put some emotion in her writing. When Darcy goes to meet with Nathan, they immediately clash. One night a storm rolls in and floods the attic through a broken window. Her father has stored many boxes up there filled with his late wife's belongings. Darcy starts to dig through them and comes upon a notebook, with a page written in her mother's handwriting. The page lists four personal items -- a vase, a recipe book, champagne glasses, and dining chairs -- all next to names of people. Later, when Darcy bumps into Nathan, he apologizes for offending her at their first meeting and asks for another chance to help her. When he spies the list in her hand, he asks her about it and Darcy tells him about her late mother. Nathan thinks she should follow through with her mom's wishes and that it may even help her open up in her proposal writing. With his help, she attempts to return everything on the list and begins to encounter unexplainable coincidences that lead her to understand the world's smallest marvels have the greatest meaning.
