Plot Synopsis
Based on the novel by Karen Cushman. During the height of the gold rush, a 13 year-old girl finds herself in a small California mining town when her mother, seeking prosperity, moves from Massachusetts. Unhappy with her imposed new lifestyle she sets in motion a plan to return to big city. As she approaches her goal, her brother dies suddenly, her mother falls in love, and a fire destroys most of the town. The threat of losing the things closest to her causes her to open her eyes and embrace her new hometown.
