Kayla Grosse - January 16, 2011

Friday at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, I talked to the lovely Erica Durance (a.k.a. Lois Lane of SMALLVILLE) with a group of reporters at the CW kick-ass cocktail party, and then I cornered Executive Producer Kelly Souders for a few one-on-one questions. Erica discussed Lois, Chloe and her own future after SMALLVILLE, while Kelly dished about Clois, Chlollie and the end of the series.

Erica was looking hot, in boots that very much resembled a sexier version of the ones she wore when Clark proposed to her in the most recent episode, "Icarus." "I'm hoping they can surprise me," said Durance in regards to what she hopes the writers come up with for the last episodes, "They do such a good job of making this Lois different....grittier without overindulging or being too graphic." But now with the season -- and series -- coming to a close, Durance has a bucket list of things she hopes the writers allow Lois to do besides just being Clark Kent's leading lady.

"I want to fly," she says with a big smile, "I want to get married...there's all kinds of butt kicking I still want to do...those are things that I want," and then she repeats it again, "that I want."

Half-way through interviewing her I can see why so many people have fallen in love with Durance and her version of Lois Lane. There's a certain spark in her eye, and a way she presents herself to not just the reporters but to her fans. Several of which were waiting for her by the bathrooms of the hotel for hours to just get a picture with her. Durance didn't disappoint and not only took pictures with them, but talked to them as well.

Delving further into the upcoming episodes I asked her about her recently filmed scenes with Allison Mack's character Chloe Sullivan (a.k.a. Lois Lane's cousin). Chloe has been MIA since the season 10 opener, and Lois just recently received a letter from Chloe in "Icarus" congratulating her on her engagement to Clark. I asked her if she could tell us about the scenes she'll share with Mack, and why Lois hasn't mentioned Chloe much throughout the season.

"Well she's been gone for so long, she ends up showing up at time that we all desperately, desperately need her. And it ends up being in a place where it's a total mind mess and people don't know what's real and not real and there's a good Chloe and a bad Chloe and there's a beautiful moment that we have where we get together and talk. I think they're doing a really good job with her character."

Something Durance has been praised for over the years is her recreation of the Lois Lane character since she appeared in season 4. When I asked her about playing this version of Lois Lane and if it was intimidating playing such an iconic character that many had played before, she said, "Yes, it was intimidating. And yes, she's a huge character. I had to learn to not take myself too seriously, and I drew a little bit from all of the other Lois Lanes and took little pieces, but I had to put all of that on the backburner and let it not be intimidating and find her for myself."

When asked if she was contacted by any of the other actresses who played Lois before her, we learned that Margot Kidder from the Superman movies, called her soon after she first played Lane on SMALLVILLE and told her quote, "You hit it out of the park."  I think we all can agree with Kidder on that statement.

Wrapping up the interview, she goes on to talk about what she will be doing after SMALLVILLE's over, "I will definitely be spending time in Los Angeles, and I will be doing anything and everything I can...spending time with my family and contacting people I haven't been able to contact...and really just getting a fresh look on life."  As to what she wants to take from the set of SMALLVILLE before she leaves, "a Blur jacket and my name plate [from the Daily Planet]."

With one final question I asked Erica at the end of SMALLVILLE if she could choose only one thing for Lois what would it be?

She paused, "You got me all teary eyed...I just...I just want Lois to be happy with who she is, you know? And when that chapter ends I want to be able to go yes, I'm happy and yes I'm ready to go on and everybody can sort of picture what happens next."

Since I didn't get enough scoop from the tight-lipped Durance, I tracked down Executive producer Kelly Souders to get some dish on Clois, Chlollie and the end of the series. And we both know you only care about gossip; so I kept my interview with Kelly in Q&A form. Thanks to Kelly for giving me such a great interview, and thanks to our lovely twitter followers for some of the questions!

TV Tango: What are you planning for Darkseid in the second half of the season?

Kelly Souders: Well he's been around definitely and is going to be around. There is definitely a plan to when he'll show up again.

TV Tango: Is he going to manifest into character or stay the way he's been so far this season?

Kelly Souders: Well he'll manifest, he'll definitely manifest. I'll just put it that way.

TV Tango: Now that Chloe returns in the next episode, what can Chlollie fans expect?

Kelly Souders: Well, I think Chlollie fans with be verrryyyyy happy, very happy.

TV Tango: Can Chlollie fans expect a love scene like Clois had in the earlier part of the Season?

Kelly Souders: I think you'll see. I'll just say that you'll see a little skin. (smiles) The idea for the Chloe and Oliver relationship really came because of watching Justin and Allison in an episode where they're sitting outside at a table ("Roulette") and we kind of thought "Woah! What was that?" And their chemistry was great…Chloe and him [Oliver Queen] need to be together.

TV Tango: With the pictures that were released yesterday, from the upcoming episode "Collateral," will Chloe be working with the Suicide Squad at all?

Kelly Souders: I think Chloe is her own woman…and she's not going to trust anyone, except obviously our heroes on our show. She's going to use whatever tools she has to get the job done.

TV Tango: Are we going to see a Clark and Lois wedding before the end of the season?

Kelly Souders: That's a good question…ummmmm. (smiles) I think there will be a big event. I think they'll have a big day.

TV Tango: Is Clark going to be involved with the Suicide Squad?

Kelly Souders: Oh wow, that's a hard one. I wouldn't say he's going to be directly involved with the Suicide Squad, but whenever there's a bit of an issue that comes up, he's going to make an appearance.

TV Tango: Al Gough and Miles Millar [Creators of SMALLVILLE] a long time ago said they had a clear picture of how they were going to end the series…?

Kelly Souders: Yes, yes.

TV Tango: Are you going to end the series the way that they had pictured or has the show evolved so much that it's a whole different ballgame?

Kelly Souders: I think the show's definitely evolved since it's been on so long. A lot of the stuff that they wanted in the show has either happened or are things that we want for the last episode; so there are going to be a couple of things that they envisioned. But, like you said, the show's been on a long time -- longer than they ever thought it would be.

TV Tango: Do you think there's any chance that Allison Mack will come back for the last episode?

Kelly Souders: We would love it. Allison is really great, she wants to be there, she loves the character, she loves the show and obviously she's a huge part of it. We're just trying to solidify that right now. You know everyone on our show is hardcore workers, they like to work and they're really dedicated, and if Allison wants to come back, we'd be glad to have her back. The door is open.

TV Tango: After the recent Arizona shootings, Twitter was buzzing about the February 4th episode "Beacon" with Martha being shot in it. Are you planning on preempting or are you going to let it air?

Kelly Souders: We're talking right now with the studio and the network because we want to be sensitive towards that [the shootings], but ultimately that aspect of the show really isn't like that. But we're all obviously really affected by it.
