TOP 10 LIST
Check out this list of THE TOP 10 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT ANIMAL MIGRATIONS, compiled and provided by series producer David Hamlin. David oversaw every aspect of the production of GREAT MIGRATIONS, which was three years in the making with crews traveling 420,000 miles across 20 countries and all seven continents.
The Top 10 Things You Might Not Know About Animal Migrations
1. The largest biomass migration on Earth is performed by one of the tiniest creatures -- plankton -- as seen in this satellite image of a blue plankton bloom off the Ireland coast. |
6. The longest land migration in the Americas, below the Arctic's caribou, is Wyoming's pronghorn antelope. They migrate more than 100 miles every year, crossing highways and fences.
2. Migrating male sperm whales can travel one million miles in a lifetime. | 7. Many Great White Sharks migrate thousands of miles every year, traversing the oceans in search of feeding and breeding opportunities.
3. Army ants can migrate in colonies of up to 700,000 -- traveling the equivalent of a human marathon every day. | 8. The longest elephant migration on Earth takes place in one of the most difficult environments on Earth -- the scorching 120 degree desert of Mali, Africa.
4. It takes four generations for the monarch butterfly to perform its annual migration from Mexico to as far north as Canada and back. | 9. The black browed albatross is born to move -- it may remain at sea for seven months out of the year.
5. The arctic tern weighs only 4 oz. but can migrate 50,000 miles/year -- the longest migration of any bird on Earth. | 10. The Serengeti's Nile crocodiles rely on wildebeest migration to survive. After devouring wildebeest, they may have to survive a full year without eating, until the migrants return. |
